Appeals Policy and Procedures:
Wilor Academy is committed to ensuring that whenever its staff assesses students’ work for external qualification is done fairly, consistently and in accordance with the specification for the qualification concerned. Assessments are conducted by staff who have appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills, and who have been trained in this activity. The centre is committed to ensuring that assessment evidence provided by candidates is produced and authenticated according to the requirements of the relevant specifications for each subject. Where a set of work is divided between staff, internal moderation and standardisation will ensure consistency.
If a student feels that this may not have happened in relation to their work, they may make use of this appeals procedure.
This procedure is available from the Centre Administrator and is posted on the college website.
1. Appeals should be made as early as possible and at least two weeks before the end of the last externally assessed paper in the examination.
2. Appeals should be made in writing by the candidate to the Centre Administrator, who will investigate the appeal with at least two other members of staff who have not been involved in
the internal assessment decision. If the Centre Administrator was directly involved in the assessment in question, the Principal will appoint another member of staff of similar or greater
seniority to conduct the investigation. Likewise, if the Centre Administrator is not able to conduct the investigation for some other reason.
3. The purpose of the appeal will be to decide whether the process used for the internal assessment conformed to the published requirements of the awarding body and the JCQ examinations code of practice.
4. The appellant will be informed in writing of the outcome of the appeal, including any relevant correspondence with the awarding body and any changes made to the procedure relating to
internal assessment.
5. The outcome of the appeal will be made known to the Principal and will be logged as a complaint. A written record will be kept and made available to the awarding body upon request. Should the appeal bring any significant irregularity to light, the awarding body will be informed.
After work has been assessed internally, it is moderated by the awarding body to ensure consistency between centres. Such moderation frequently changes the marks awarded for internally assessed work, this is outside the control of Wilor Academy and is not covered by this procedure. A copy of the appeals procedure of the relevant awarding body can be obtained from the Exams Officer upon request.
Scope of the Internal Appeals Process
Any student who is unhappy with the grade of an assessed assignment has the right to appeal according to the guidelines and regulations issued by Pearson. It should be noted that after work has been assessed internally it is moderated externally by the Awarding Body to ensure consistency between centres. Such moderation may change the marks awarded internally but is beyond the control of Wilor Academy.
Information Provided to Candidates
Candidates will be given access to:
• The marks or grades awarded to them by the assessors of an internal assessment
• All comments recorded by the centre relating to the candidate’s internally assessed work
• Any correspondence between the Centre and Awarding Body relating to their internally assessed work
• Information, if available at the time of appeal, as to whether their work was sampled for moderation by the Awarding Body
• The moderated work by the Awarding Body
• Relevant Awarding Body procedures for the conduct of internal assessments.
Management of the Internal Appeals Process
The process will be managed by the Programme Leader from the Internal Quality Assurance team (IQA) on behalf of the Principal. In any case where the Programme Leader is unavailable or has been involved in the assessment(s) in question, the Principal will appoint an alternative leader from among the IQA Team.
The Internal Appeals Committee will include two members of the teaching staff who have appropriate experience as internal assessors and who have not been associated with the assessment(s) in question.
The Centre Administrator will administrate for the Internal Appeals Committee.
The Chair of the Internal Appeals Committee will ensure that the Principal and the Chief Executive Officer are informed of all current appeals and of the dates of scheduled meetings.
The Internal Appeals Procedure
The candidate should write to the Programme Leader stating the grounds for appeal. The application must be made as soon as the circumstances become known and always before the date of the first written paper of the examination series. The Chair of the Internal Appeals Committee will ensure that the candidate is given access to all information necessary for the preparation of a formal appeal.
The Internal Appeals Committee will be given access to any information necessary in order to determine whether the internal assessment procedures were in conformity with the regulations of
the Awarding Body and the JCQ Code of Practice.
The candidate has the right to represent his/her case in person and to be accompanied by a member of their family or a guardian.
Minutes of all meetings of the Internal Appeals Committee shall be kept formally.
The outcome of the appeal will be determined by the IQA team and will be communicated in writing, including the reasons for the decision, to the candidate and to the Principal.
In addition to determining the outcome of an individual appeal, the Internal Appeals Committee shall communicate to the Principal any matters of concern about the internal assessment process. The Awarding Body will be notified of any outcome of an appeal that has full implications for the conduct of the examination or the issue of results at the Centre. Full details of the appeal shall be made available to the Awarding Body on request.
Candidates must follow this procedure and complete the appeals form below:
Candidates must lodge an appeal within one week following the 1 to 1 assessment tutorial.
